Medical University of Varna has a rich history spanning over half a century. Established in 1961, it has evolved into a leading institution in medical education and research. METHODOLOGY FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION COMPETITION AT MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF Varna, 2024/2025

1) Admission Requirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS – EU & EEA CITIZENS

  • 1) Applicants must have completed upper secondary education (hold a Diploma / secondary school leaving certificate/ 3 A-level subjects), which enables them to continue their studies in higher institutions and universities in the country where the upper secondary education has been completed.

    1.1) Applicants with diplomas issued from Bulgaria should contact us for additional information.

    2) Applicants must have studied, completed, and obtained grades in Biology and Chemistry subjects in secondary school.

    *German applicants shall refer to our Infoblatt.

    • 2.1. Applicants who have negative evaluations (failing marks) in any of the above-mentioned two subjects in their secondary school (transcripts and Diploma) will not take part in the selection process.

    • 2.2. Biology and Chemistry high school courses marked in the Diploma as optional will not be accepted.

    • 2.3. Biology and Chemistry courses taught at a degree program/University level or in a pre-med program and respectively obtained grades in those subjects shall not be accepted in place of the required courses and grades at the high school level.

    • 2.4. Science subjects/natural sciences/ will not be sufficient for application purposes and considered as an alternative to Biology and Chemistry subjects unless the high school law in the relevant country does not stipulate obligatory training in Biology and Chemistry in one subject.

    3) Applicants interested in the programs taught in English - Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Pharmacy sit the Biology and Chemistry Entry Tests in English. Those applicants who have failed any of the Entry tests will not participate in the ranking/s for admission.

    4) Applicants for the Programs with English language of instruction must meet the English language requirements.

    • Applicants for programs where the language of instruction is English must prove their English proficiency by taking an English language proficiency test administered by the Department of Foreign Languages, Communication, and Sport or by providing one of the following secondary education diplomas or certificates:

    • Bilingual diploma from a language school where one of the languages of instruction is English, with a matriculation examination in English (level B2 or higher)

    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma for instruction in English)

    • European Baccalaureate (for instruction in English)

    • The recognized language proficiency certificates are as follows:

    • IELTS Academic (Overall Band Score 6.5) or higher

    • ESOL International (CPE 180 - 199, CAE score of 190, FCE score 180 – 190) or higher

    • TOEFL iBT (computer-based test) – minimum score of 80

    • TOEFL PBT (paper-based test) – minimum score of 550

    • PTE Academic (60 overall score) or higher

      For applicants who are citizens of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), Ireland, the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as for applicants who completed their secondary education in these countries, English language proficiency certification or English language proficiency test is not required. Those applicants shall submit a diploma for high school completion in the UK, Ireland, USA, Australia, Canada (English-speaking part), and New Zealand, with a diploma grade in English language of no less than "Very good" (for applicants following the British curriculum GCSE English language (Grade 6 to 9).

    Applicants who do not have the required level of English proficiency may enroll in a Preparatory course in English language proficiency and specialized disciplines.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS – NON-EU & NON-EEA CITIZENS

GENERAL INFORMATION

Foreign students applying to the Medical University of Varna can choose from 14 undergraduate medical specialties taught in Bulgarian or English.

Prospective students interested in Bulgarian-language programs must pass an examination if they speak Bulgarian. Non-EU applicants for these programs also undergo admission exams.

For those lacking proficiency in Bulgarian, a preparatory course is available.

Similarly, a preparatory course in English is offered for applicants interested in English-language programs but lacking proficiency.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

To join Medical University-Varna, foreign students must meet certain criteria:

  • Completed secondary education that allows continuation of studies in their home country's universities.

  • Studied and passed Biology and Chemistry subjects in secondary school, with an average mark of at least 65% in these subjects.

  • For UK applicants, submission of GCSE and GCE A-level certificates. If applying before receiving the final A-level, a Statement of Results must be provided upon application, followed by the actual certificate later.

  • Proficiency in English, demonstrated through exams like IELTS, TOEFL, or with diplomas from English-language schools.

  • Successful ranking in entry tests for chosen programs.

  • Approval of application documents by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science.

  • UK citizens also need to apply for a visa type "D" for study purposes.

Once the Admission Committee approves the application, documents are sent to the Bulgarian Ministry of Education for final approval. This process may take up to a month."

Admission Process Overview

Applicants seeking admission to the program are required to submit the following documents within the specified application period:

  • Completed and signed application form.

  • Current professional CV (Curriculum Vitae).

  • Completed and signed application form for recognition of acquired higher education at a foreign institution.

  • Administrative fee payment for recognition of acquired higher education at a foreign institution.

  • Copy of the higher education diploma or equivalent document, legalized, translated into Bulgarian, and certified as per international treaties or general legalization procedures.

  • Copy of the higher education diploma supplement/transcript of all studied disciplines, legalized, translated into Bulgarian, and certified as per international treaties or general legalization procedures.

  • Original or copy of the European Diploma Supplement (if available).

  • Certificate(s) for English language proficiency.

  • Employer's recommendations (optional but advantageous).

  • Declaration of financial support from applicant's parent(s), legalized by a Notary Public, and translated into Bulgarian.

  • Document certifying a change in the applicant's name(s) if applicable, legalized and translated into Bulgarian.

  • Original medical health certificate issued within one month before the application date, legalized and translated into Bulgarian.

  • Copy of the diploma for completed secondary education translated into Bulgarian.

  • Certified true copy of an ID document.

  • Five recent color passport-size photos.

  • Please note that NON-EU citizens must also apply for a study visa (type D) as part of the application process.

  • Prospective students can submit their application documents personally, through an authorized representative with an apostilled (legalized) official power of attorney translated into Bulgarian, or via postal mail to the Office of Admissions by the specified deadline.

Application Documents for EU and EEA Citizens

  • Completed, signed Application Form 2024.

  • Copy of high school diploma with academic transcript showing grades in Biology and Chemistry, or GCE Advanced Level with grades in Biology and Chemistry.

  • Diploma Equivalency Certificate from a Regional Department of Education in Bulgaria.

  • Original document certifying the right to apply to universities in the country of high school education.

  • Copy of valid ID/Passport or two citizenship documents for dual citizens with Bulgarian citizenship.

  • Four recent color photos (4/5 cm).

High school documents from abroad must be legalized and translated into Bulgarian, following international treaties or general legalization procedures.

Application Documents for Non-EU & Non-EEA Citizens

  • Completed, signed Application Form 2024.

  • Copy of high school diploma with academic transcript showing grades in Biology and Chemistry, or GCE Advanced Level with grades in Biology and Chemistry. The average score in Biology and Chemistry should be at least 62%.

  • Original document certifying the right to apply to universities in the country of high school education.

  • Diploma Equivalency Certificate from a Regional Department of Education in Bulgaria.

  • Copy of international passport or two citizenship documents for dual citizens with Bulgarian citizenship.

  • Four recent color photos (4/5).

3. Score Calculation:

  • Average score of Diploma marks in Biology and Chemistry, scaled to a six-point system.

  • Marks from entrance exams in Biology and Chemistry are tripled.

  • Maximum score: 42; Minimum score: 24.

Applicants with failing marks in any test will not be ranked.

Non-native English speakers without B1 proficiency won't be ranked.

Technical document errors can be fixed before rankings.

Final rankings:

  • 9th September 2024 for Bulgarian Programs

  • 13th September 2024 for English Programs

Enrollment Dates:

  • 10th to 13th September 2024 for Bulgarian Programs

  • 16th to 27th September 2024 for English Programs

  • By 29th September 2024 for Bulgarian Preparatory Class

  • By 25th October 2024 for English Preparatory Class
